questions for thought & discussion

  1. How should the Christian apply this concept of warfare in his day-to-day life?  How will it affect his perspective on evangelism?

  2. In a world of "spin doctoring" this concept of God's partiality to His elect can, on the one hand, make God look racist and, on the other, make Christians appear arrogant and elite.  Should we promote this understanding of our faith or consider it strong meat rather than the milk of the Word?

  3. How popular do you think the practice of not requiring taxes from non-citizens would be in our society?  How popular do you think the attendant prohibition on voting would be?  Compare your answer to the current tax and voting situation in our society.

  4. In gaining an understanding of the state of war that the Christian finds himself in, what unrighteous tendency can arise in his thinking to accomplish victory?

  5. Warfare involves tactics.  Describe varying situations that a Christian woman might find herself in and the attendant tactics she could employ -- keeping in mind this section in Institutes.

application

One of the surest ways to identify whether you understand a subject is to write a point of view paper (sometimes referred to as a position paper).  This exercise helps to unearth areas of confusion, uncertainty, and/or disagreement, many times revealing that a number of unanswered questions remain. Once completed, you may submit your paper for comments.

After formulating your position(s) on the subjects covered in each lesson, a good next step is to engage in conversation (with your spouse, children, parents, friends, or co-workers) to better hone your skill in communicating the concepts you have learned and are assimilating into your own thinking.  Do not be concerned about “messing up” or doing it the “wrong way” as you will do plenty of both!  As with anything worth doing, practice will refine this skill, which is vital in order to fulfill the Great Commission.  If you find you need some one-on-one interaction, you may submit a question or request an appointment.
